We just sold everything and quit our jobs to travel.

I’m writing you from the passenger seat of a Penske truck, from somewhere north of Medford Oregon.

As of 5 PM today I am jobless homeless and I couldn’t be more excited.

About two weeks ago my husband and I decided to resign from our jobs to pursue our passions. This decision was a sudden one.

You see we have been trying to do something like this for awhile. During summer 2018 we tried to sell our house with plans to buy a duplex. The idea was that we’d live in one side and rent out the other. After getting steady rent, Matthew would be able to quit his job and we’d live off the rent and my salary while he completed a software engineering boot camp. Then he would get a software engineering job and we’d have money and flexibility to travel and pursue passion projects and idk- enjoy being young adults!

I know crazy talk!

Anyway, our house didn’t sell during summer. So we pulled it off the market and kind of gave up. Around November we decided we would try again. By some twist of fate the house sold in 5 days!!! Happily we found a super great duplex almost immediately after and went into escrow on the property.

Fast forward to two days before Christmas.

We get our inspection results back on the duplex and basically learn it’s a toxic waste zone. The repairs were so substantial and expensive, even if the sellers would have fixed all the major problems, like mold, and Radon Gas mitigation, there we’re still tens of thousands of dollars worth in other repairs to do. So we sadly pulled out of escrow. ( But props to our inspector Simon Holmes with WIN Home inspection, thanks for being good at your job, you saved us a boatload of money and years of heartache!)

This left us about three days from new year’s and our house that we were living in was scheduled to close sale on 1/11. We had no where to go.

To say I was panicking was an understatement.

Not only is it incredibly hard to move in general but we were looking at renting a tiny expensive apartment aaaand paying to put a bunch of our stuff in storage.

So when Matthew’s grandparents offered to let us move in with them while Matthew finishes his final term of school we didn’t see a reason not to take them up on it. So with roughly two weeks to get our lives literally packed up we decided to take a leap and chase our dreams.

We’ve got a chunk of money from the sale of the house, some additional savings, and a boatload of unspent air miles so we’re taking off!

I’ve got some ideas and plans in the works, some meetings and interviews etc. But really I don’t know what is going to happen.

I have no idea what the hell I am going to do on Monday!!!

I’m going to be posting on here more often and updating the blog with our progress. I will eventually go over how we are working this out logistically, go more in depth on how we paid off all our debt in the last two weeks, I will also be posting on how we are making money to pay for stuff like insurance, cell phones etc. But all this is to say…

We’ve sold everything to travel the world so stay tuned because we’re about to do some adventuring!!!

Xoxo,

Sorcha
